Barometer for steel prices in Europe - 16 Mar, 2010
European steel market has borne severe brunt of the recessionary onslaught. The impact has been severe and prolonged in this region as the saturated economy is dependant more on regular demand rather than on growth typical of developing economy. It proximity to the Ukraine, CIS and Turkey has made it all the more susceptible to fluctuations in these exporting hubs.

Characteristically European steel market is channelized and durable demand from service centre and end use segments viz., plant and machinery, automobile and ship building rather than the whims of traders.

Product prices have shown undulation throughout 2009 albeit the gradient has been less pronounced since buying was more dependant on stock position rather than demand fundamentals. Belated efforts by the government to provide stimulus like cut in interest rates and tax rebate on purchase on new cars have done a precious little in easing the grim situation.

But off late, the situation has seen dramatic improvement and prices are increasing everyday.
